Esther Levigne - Work of previous years
Esther Levigne (Barcelona, 1973) studied graphics at the Academie for Visual Arts at Maastricht and did her final exams in 1995. In her pictures, women, pin-ups and saints are caught up in associations with scissors, knives and other piercing tools that call up a world of beauty and violence, blood and roses. Living in Calvinist Holland she appears to become more aware of her religious background that has produced so many images of martyrs and torture. She contrast violent scenes with a sweet candy colour and smooth brushwork.
