Tryptichs - on the question of power
De eerste drie triptieken op deze pagina hebben als thema de macht binnen de zogenaamde legitieme staat, de macht die iemand kan verkrijgen bij geboorte, door zijn afkomst, en de koloniale macht. De arrogantie van de macht.

Known under different names. At first it was called ‘Class’, refering to the social status of the main character, later the title ‘Radio days’ was used refering to the nostalgic atmosphere The work is part of a series of three similar triptiques that are all concerned with ‘power’ and ‘authority’; this first one represents power obtained by right of birth, an authoritative power that the person involved may not be aware of, so natural, but obviously not always acceptable by others that are confronted by it. The side panels reflect the bygone days, the central character may be present himself or the left panel maybe his butler. The dancing couple on the right is a scene that flashes the memory of the old man, and symbolically it is the dance of life. The whole setting remains enigmatic, the space and colouring are claustrophobic, there could be a window behind the venetian blind but it remains closed.
In onze wereld is het zo dat de plek waar iemand geboren wordt de meest bepalende is voor zijn invloed binnen de maatschappij. De centrale figuur is een man die kennelijk op de goede plek is geboren. Hij straalt kracht en gezag uit, maar met de vervorming in zijn gezicht probeer ik er een onderhuidse, psychologische dimensie aan te geven. Het doet de toeschouwer stilstaan bij de vraag wat zo'n man nu eigenlijk in gedachten heeft, van waaruit hij handelt en waar het fout zou kunnen gaan in het zo vanzelfsprekend aanvaarden van macht over anderen. Het linker paneel zou een bediende, een butler kunnen zijn, terwijl het danspaar op het rechter paneel zijn jeugd en zijn leven voorstelt waaraan hij terugdenkt.
