Jan van Eden

Jan van Eden (Voorburg, The Netherlands, 1942) studied mathematics and science in Groningen and did  masters in sedimentology and in geophysics at Leiden. He worked as a geologist in Spain, Central and Southern Africa, Brazil, the USA, and the Middle East. As a painter he is self-taught. He became interested in art as a child in the post-war period of the 50s and at the age of 18 he decided that painting was an existential necessity for him. In particular the acquaintance with the German pre-war expressionism was a major stimulus.

From the early 60s he started to create an extensive body of work, which has remained powerful in evoking the mood of the time over the coming decennia. He made his first public appearance in 1972 with a well-received solo exhibition at the Amsterdam gallery “De Sfinx”, presenting his early expressionistic work, which was painted during a 4-year stay in Zambia. His development as a self-made painter proved to be a long and painful exercise. The restless search for a style that coincides with his personality began to take shape during the Brazilian years in the early 80s and from 1985 he could dedicate himself fully to his art. In this year he settled in Amsterdam while maintaining a summer residence in Sabayes (Spain).

He exhibited regularly in the Netherlands and he became a member of the prestigious artist society of the Netherlands “Arti et Amicitiae”. In 2002 he had a retrospective exhibition from the sixties to the most recent work in Spain http://www.artxs.nl/vaneden/02Huesca.htm. In 2007 he made an exhibition of socially and politically engaged work, looking back at issues like 60s Vietnam to recent events of 11 September 2001, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq  http://www.artxs.nl/vaneden/10ZaragozaCAI.htm. This exhibition was shown in several Spanish cities. Another travelling exhibition focussed on the Palestinian issue of the Nakba 1948  http://www.artxs.nl/vaneden/10Zaragoza-CentroHistoria.htm.

Besides the politically and historically inspired work he also has a distinct vision on contemporary life. In his "Street Scenes," he reflects on a modern self-centered lifestyle, where the human contact appears to be transient only. He seeks in an intuitive manner to portray relationships between people, often by combining people on loose panels in dyptichs or tryptichs. In a recent  exhibition "In Transit" the theme is crisis and uncertainty, where man is in motion and uncertain of his destination.
